Underdevelopment of the Ear and Ear Construction (Ear Reconstruction)

Congenital ear development defects are seen in 1 out of 5,000. It is seen more in patients whose family members have ear development abnormalities. The reasons can be because of many different factors. It is seen in guys two times more than in women and mainly on the right side. It is rarely seen on both sides.  Inner ear is observed in 90% of the affected ear side from the differential structure formations of the inner ear development with outer ear development. Operation necessity for inner ear is seen in 1 out of 9 patients.

In order for the child not to be psychologically traumatized, the constructive operation should begin at approximately the age of 4-5. Cartridge that is taken from the rib on the opposite side and the mold from the other ear forms the ear cartridge. The cartridge made, which is, is embedded under the skin where it should be. During the same session, or in following sessions, the location of the earlobe can be corrected. The back of the cartilage installed after the first session is separated and the open area is closed with skin graft. Ear depth is formed in following sessions and bulging of the front ear called targus is formed.

Along with ear development disorders, there can be other development disorders in other organs or the syndromes can develop together. It is particularly important to know whether the patient faces any development disorders in life-sustaining organs. Children with ear development disorders can be psychologically effective on the family. A plastic surgeon or a psychiatrist if necessary should carefully inform the family of the patient. A normal ear structure should never be expected. What is important is for the society and for the patient to accept the shape of the ear, which is going to be formed.
